Exploring Altered Books - A 3-Day Workshop

With Linda Liabenow

The Boyne Arts Center has planned a very special fundraising workshop for May 22nd - 24th, 2023 at Park of the Pines.  This fundraiser is to help support our operational expenses as we continue to grow and serve the community.  We are excited this year to have a unique project lined up for you and a very gifted instructor (Linda Liabenow) for all 3 days to fill our minds with endless possibilities. This workshop is packed with creativity galore.   Below is Linda’s Bio as well as a description of the workshop and all the details.  We hope you will find this inspiring and intriguingly different!

Linda Liabenow’s Bio

I am a papermaker-book artist living in Northern Michigan.  I discovered the art of making handmade paper while studying Fiber Arts in college.  I was hooked!  I immediately began turning my collection of papers into artists books.  After obtaining my degree in Art Education I continued my passion for book arts.  Over the past thirty years I’ve been fortunate to study with many master bookbinders from the United States, Canada, Germany, and Scotland.  I was a student at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina where I was inspired by Daniel Essig and Heidi Kyle and went on to complete a Masters in Bookbinding at Hollander’s in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In 2007 I was introduced to Altered Books when I became a member of ISABA (International Society of Altered Book Artists) and MIABA (Michigan Altered Book Artists) We met quarterly and held workshops with many visiting artists, like Nellie Wortman.  Nellie had a profound influence on my work with textiles and fabric books.

In 2010 I began participating in Michigan Juried Art Shows, which generated requests for commissioned journals and teaching paper-making and book arts workshops.  Teaching my craft has provided opportunities to submit my work in local gallery exhibits.

As an artist, I am essentially motivated in creating works that call for the participation of the viewer to the same extent as my involvement in the construction.  Books are my passion and I enjoy sharing my skills as much as I enjoy learning new ones.  Also check out The Paper Maiden on FB

Workshop Description:

Give an old, unwanted book a new life by turning it into a work of art!  Starting with a book as your canvas, participants will tear away pages and then add their own creative expressions through painting, drawing, collage, rubber stamping, stenciling, photomontage, and writing.

Instruction of altered book techniques will include how to create various pockets, pop-ups, doors, windows, fold outs, and a carved niche to display a special found object.  The focus of the project will be to upcycle as much as possible using mixed media materials to embellish your covers and pages.  The themes and content of your book will be up to your imagination to create a one of-a-kind work of art with Linda sharing plenty of inspiration to guide you.

Where:  Park of the Pines 4094 Springwater Beach Rd., Boyne City, MI. 49712

When: May 22nd - 24th, 2023 From 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Hardcover Book:  Look for a sewn spine, not glued.   Spine should be about 3 inches thick and pages should be a sturdy weight. (Not thin like a dictionary page)

An additional heavy book to use as a weight while your pages are drying.

2 large glue sticks

Tools:  scissors, ruler, small self-healing cutting mat, craft knife

Small container for washing your paint brushes while you work.

Craft heat gun or hair blow dryer to speed up process of drying paints and glues as you work.

Decorative papers in a print or color scheme of your choice (4-6 sheets) JoAnn’s, Hobby Lobby, or Michael’s have a lot to choose from.

You might like to bring any mixed media supplies you may already be working with.  Watercolor paints, acrylic paints, colored pencils or markers, favorite rubber stamps. (optional)

A small object to display inside your book.  Could be something special to you or that goes with your theme. Should be something rather flat, less than one inch thick.  A few examples might be pieces of old jewelry, pressed flowers, small flat stones, shells, metal charms.

Ephemera: Think of collage items you may want to include with the theme of your book.  Photos, old greeting cards, decorative paper napkins, tickets, post cards, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, letters, poems, receipts, ledger pages, sheet music, scraps of scrapbook papers, stickers, tags, buttons, ribbons, fabric scraps,  etc…
