About the Course

Class Content:

  • How to scale and transfer the image to canvas.

  • Sketching with a brush, charcoal, or pencil on canvas.

  • Tips and techniques

  • Understanding the light source and how to use it in your paintings.


Supply List for Participants:                                                                                      

  • 1-2 – 11x14 Canvas or canvas panel.       


Recommended but bring what you have:                                                                 

  • #2 & #4 Hog Bristle Flats can be soft bristle like sable.                                             

  • #2 & #4 Hog Bristle Filberts can be soft bristle like sable.                                        

  • 1 –1 ½ “ Flat, or any large brushes you have, doesn’t have to be special.    

  • Gamsol (odorless mineral spirits).  Bring to class in small jar with lid.

  • Ruler


Oil Paints: 

These are suggested but bring what you have, it never hurts to have a lot of paint choices.

  • Titanium White

  • Yellow Ochre

  • Cad. Yellow

  • Cad .Orange (optional)

  • Cad. Red

  • Transparent Red Oxide (or warm brown)

  • Alizarin Crimson

  • Van Dyke Brown or Raw Umber

  • Ultramarine Blue

  • Viridian (optional)

  • Black (optional)


Boyne Arts Center will provide:

  • Paper Towel & Palette Paper

  • Easels

  • Pencil

  • Bamboo Skewers

Cancelation Policy: BAC Cancelation Policy: Request to cancel a class/workshop must be made at least twenty-one (21) days in advance prior to the start of class to qualify for a refund, (minus a $15.00 processing fee).  There will be NO REFUNDS given for cancellation request for less than twenty (20) days prior to the start of class.  In the event you are unable to attend a class you have registered for due to illness or an emergency; refunds or credits will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis and is up to the instructor whether he/she is willing to offer a make-up session.   Please do not come to class if you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID or have recently tested positive. In the event we do not have the required minimum participants, you will be notified that class is canceled and you will be refunded.  Thank you.



Your Instructor

Originally from Detroit and a self-taught artist; Robert has lived and worked in Emmet County, Michigan for more than 50 years. Bob started a Sign Design; outdoor advertising business that he owned for 40 years. Bob retired in 2014 and has since devoted his days to his lifelong passion for art whether it be painting, teaching, taking workshops, drawing, or doing research. Predominately a representational artist, Robert has recently begun exploring a contemporary approach using realistic subjects. His goal is to generate works with a clean and minimalist style, keeping his compositions free of extraneous information. Most of his paintings are oil on canvas, which he produces from reference photos and drawings in his studio.
